Mr. John Ivory “GRADY” Mallory, Sr., 83, of Carson, VA who resided at the Walnut Hill Convalescent Center, Petersburg, VA went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 13, 2013. He was born December 23, 1929 in Brunswick County to the late George E. Mallory and Arlene Fields Mallory. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James, William, Robert, Albert, Thomas and Channing Mallory. John was baptized at an early age at Big Bethel Church in McKenney, VA. In his early years, he drove school buses in McKenney and Sussex County. He was a Sawmill worker and log truck driver with Chappell’s in Carson, VA. John also enjoyed working as an auto mechanic in different areas of Dinwiddie County and Stony Creek (Jordan Store). He really enjoyed playing his harmonica, singing the Blues, Fox Trot and “You Are My Sunshine”. He leaves to cherish his memories, a loving wife of 64 years, Iola D. Mallory; thirteen children, Ruby L. Palmer of Rockville, MD; John Ivory Mallory Jr. of Petersburg, VA; Lawrence K. Mallory, Sr. (Myrtle) of Dinwiddie, VA; Larry D. Mallory (Sharon) of Matoaca, VA; Clarence L. Mallory of Petersburg, VA; Patricia A. Mallory of Petersburg, VA; Delva J. Mallory of South Chesterfield; Walter R. Mallory of Colonial Heights, VA; twins Janice B. Mallory and Janette Mallory Coles (Linwood), both of Petersburg, VA; twins Frances A. Mallory-Thorpe of Dinwiddie, VA and Francine A. Mallory of Petersburg, VA and Darlene E. (Mallory) Coles (Arnold) of Dinwiddie, VA; twenty-nine grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; one brother, Lawyer Mallory (Alfreda) of Maryland and one sister, Clara M. Palmer of Maryland; one brother-in-law, William Brown (Doris) of Richmond, VA and two sister-in-laws, Carrie Taylor of Stony Creek, VA and Rebecca Thorne of Carson, VA; a host of nieces and nephews, too numerous to name; and a special caretaker, Dennis Robinson. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2013 at Good Shepherd Baptist Church, Petersburg; pastor, the Rev. Jeffrey Reaves officiating.
Interment will follow at Dabney Family Cemetery, Dinwiddie. The family will assemble one hour prior to service at 946 Gustavo Lane, Petersburg.
